Plant Watering Calculator
A starting interval for your plant, adjusted for the season and the light it actually gets.
Always confirm with the soil: water when the top 2–5 cm is dry, whatever the calendar says.
Why there is no fixed schedule
“Water once a week” is the most common houseplant advice and the most common cause of dead houseplants. A plant’s thirst depends on how much light it gets, how warm and dry the room is, the size and material of the pot, and how fast it is growing — the same Monstera might want water every six days in a bright July window and every three weeks in a dim December corner. An interval is only ever a starting point.
Reading the signals
The soil is the real schedule. Push a finger 2–5 cm into the pot: for most tropical foliage plants, water when that depth is dry; for succulents, cacti, snake plants and ZZ plants, wait until the pot is dry throughout. Lifting the pot works too — a dry pot is startlingly light. When you do water, water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes, then empty the saucer. Frequent little sips keep the surface wet and the roots thirsty.
Overwatering kills more than drought
Most houseplants tolerate going a little too dry: leaves droop, you water, they recover. Constantly wet soil is different — it suffocates roots and invites rot, which is usually fatal by the time it shows. Yellowing lower leaves on damp soil mean water less, not more. In autumn and winter, growth slows and drying takes far longer, so stretch every interval; almost everything on this list wants a drier, calmer off-season than its summer routine.
This calculator is built into Leaflet, which keeps watering and feeding schedules for every plant you own, with a photo timeline so you can watch a year of growth in one scroll. No subscription, no AI gimmicks.
