Wine Drink Window Calculator
When should you open that bottle? Pick the style, enter the vintage, and see where it sits today.
Windows are broad guides for well-made, well-stored examples of each style — producer, vintage quality and storage all shift them.
What a drink window is
A drink window is the stretch of years when a wine is likely to show at its best — after harsh youthful tannin and raw oak have softened, and before fruit fades and oxidation takes over. Wines built for ageing follow an arc: tight and primary young, then open and layered through the middle of the window, then gradually drier and more fragile at the end.
What sets the window
Structure does. Tannin, acidity, sugar and alcohol are preservatives, which is why a Barolo or a classed-growth Bordeaux can improve for two decades while most supermarket reds are at their best within a year or two of release. Sweet and fortified wines stretch furthest of all — vintage Port is often barely ready at fifteen years. Within a style, the producer and the vintage matter enormously: a great year adds years to the window, a weak one shortens it, and a light producer’s wine will always drink earlier than a blockbuster’s.
Using the estimate well
Treat the window as a planning tool, not a countdown. If you own several bottles of the same wine, open them across the window — one early, one at the projected peak — and let the wine tell you how it is evolving; that is far more reliable than any table. Storage is the silent variable: these ranges assume a cool, dark, stable spot around 12–14 °C. A bottle kept warm ages measurably faster, so shorten the window for anything stored in a kitchen.
This calculator is built into Cellar Book, which tracks drink windows on every bottle in your cellar — see what is ageing, ready or fading at a glance, with label photos, tasting notes on the 100-point scale and an offline map of your collection’s regions.
