Why put a number on a cellar

Most people who collect wine seriously have no idea what the rack is worth, and the usual moment of discovery is a bad one — a flood, a failed cooling unit, a house move, or an insurer asking for a figure after something has already gone wrong. Standard home contents policies frequently cap any single item, and some exclude alcohol above a threshold entirely, so a cellar that quietly grew past five figures may be substantially uninsured without anyone deciding that.

Purchase price is not replacement cost

The figure that matters for insurance is what it would cost to buy the collection again today, which for anything mature is usually well above what you paid. A Bordeaux bought on release for £40 and drunk fifteen years later might cost £120 to replace, if it is still available at all — and for sought-after vintages, availability is the real constraint rather than price. Valuing by tier, as above, gets you far closer than totting up old receipts.

Value and readiness are different questions

A cellar has two clocks running: what a bottle is worth, and whether it is ready. They diverge more than people expect. Fine wine generally appreciates while it is still ageing, plateaus around its drinking window, then falls away as the risk of being past it grows — which means the financially optimal moment to sell often arrives before the best moment to drink. Treat this as a planning figure

Tier averages give you an order of magnitude, not a valuation. For probate, a formal insurance schedule or a sale, you want a merchant valuation or auction estimates against actual bottles and vintages. What this is good for is the question most collectors cannot answer at all: roughly what is in there, and is it more than you assumed.
